Southern Cross Chambers - Background
Southern Cross Chambers is one of the largest sets of Chambers in Auckland. It is located on the 12th and 13th floors of the Southern Cross Building. The Chambers currently has 17 members. The practice areas of barristers in Southern Cross Chambers are diverse reflecting a broad range of legal skills and depth of experience.

Opportunity
Part-time position available for a senior law student in their final or penultimate year of study. The position will involve personal and/or legal assistance to two busy barristers, one from Richmond Chambers and the other from Southern Cross Chambers. The two barristers currently share an assistant, and wish to continue this sharing arrangement. This role is a fantastic opportunity for a law student to gain some experience in two busy CBD Chambers, covering a broad range of legal specialisations.

The position is for approximately 10 hours a week. There may be more weekly hours available, subject to convenience and workload of the barristers. Currently, the barrister from Southern Cross Chambers requires less assistance than the barrister from Richmond Chambers.

The successful applicant will be required to provide a range of administrative and legal assistance to both barristers.

In relation to the barrister from Richmond Chambers, duties will include general file management and office support, accounting and invoicing (including seeking reimbursement for expenses), managing subscriptions, licenses and certificates, diary management and arranging conferences, document preparation, and drafting, typing, proof-reading, and legal research.

In relation to the barrister from Southern Cross Chambers, general litigation support will be required, with duties including file management and administration, as well as occasional legal research.

The position requires someone who is willing to be flexible and perform duties promptly, when and if they arise. The position is suited to someone who is highly organised, has strong attention to detail and excellent time management skills. This is because the role will involve multitasking, and will require an ability to balance duties between the two barristers. Familiarity with legal databases and experience in legal research is preferred.

Reasonable training will be provided by the outgoing assistant, across a period of two weeks.

The start date is provisional at this stage, and will include light training as an initial step.
