About the Event

Overseas people and companies investing in New Zealand businesses and buying or leasing land or houses in New Zealand may be subject to the Overseas Investment Act 2005. There are different requirements and thresholds for overseas investments in different types of land, businesses, fishing quota, and business assets. The requirements are strict, and breaches of the Act can result in significant penalties. This webinar will help you understand the overseas investment regime, recognise when your client needs to gain consent or make a notification, and know how to go about doing that.

Learning outcomes:

  • Become aware of the Overseas Investment Act 2005 and the requirements it sets out.
  • Recognise an ‘Overseas Person’ and when a transaction may require an application for consent.
  • Learn about the National Security and Public Order Notification Regime and when a notification is needed.
  • Gain insight into the obligations on legal practitioners and other advisors when dealing with overseas investments.
  • Know where to turn for further information when you encounter a situation where you think the Overseas Investment Act may apply.

Who should attend?

This webinar will be of interest to property lawyers, commercial lawyers and general practitioners. Immigration advisors, accountants and business advisors who deal with investors from outside New Zealand may also find this it useful.
