A Guide to ADLS CPD

If you need a hand we're here to help; email cpd@adls.org.nz or call 09 303 5278.

ADLS provides face-to-face and online CPD options, and all ADLS CPD complies with the CPD Rules. Our CPD is available to everyone, everywhere in New Zealand or overseas as long as you have a broadband internet connection.

ADLS members receive significant discounts on all ADLS CPD events. More details about membership here.

Click on the below headings for more information.

Overview of ADLS's CPD

ADLS provides CPD to our members and non-members in a variety of ways, either face-to-face or online by way of:

  • two-hour seminars (in person or via live stream to your office or portable device);
  • one-hour webinars (to your office or portable device through the internet);
  • CPD On Demand (recorded webinars and seminars);
  • our annual Cradle to Grave Conference, which covers a range of property, trust and family law topics;
  • half-day conferences and workshops.

ADLS's CPD is available to everyone, everywhere, as long as you have a broadband internet connection. It is available to legal practitioners, legal executives and others, whether member or non-member, in New Zealand or overseas. The live streaming of our 2-hour seminars means that all ADLS CPD events can be accessed via the internet.

ADLS members receive significant discounts on all ADLS CPD events. Compare member and non-member under 'CPD Pricing' below. Annual membership is only $214 +GST per lawyer. The membership year runs from 1 February to 31 January. Applications from eligible persons may be accepted at any time and the membership fee will be calculated on a pro-rata basis for any part-year. Find out how to join today.

ADLS CPD subject matter comprises areas you or our expert law committees recommend to us. We provide a mix of cutting edge topics as well as updates and refreshers in areas of common interest. If you have any ideas for topics or presenters, we would love to hear from you. Send us an email at cpd@adls.org.nz.

If you need to earn CPD hours, the event must comply with the CPD Rules. To comply, any event must provide an opportunity for interaction and feedback (see Rule 3.1(b)).

All ADLS CPD activities listed on our website under On Demand and in our CPD Calendar comply with the CPD Rules.

CPDPR - ADLS's Online CPD Plan and Record

How ADLS's free online CPD Plan and Record (CPDPR) assists

ADLS’ online CPDPR helps you comply with the CPD Rules and is available free of charge to both ADLS members and non-members alike. Prompts for ‘learning needs’ and ‘actions’ are provided and suggested learning outcomes appear in the reflections area for you to review and edit.

Your record is stored securely online and you can access, update, or change it at anytime, anywhere.

How to create an online CPDPR

First, you need to 'sign up' or 'sign in' to our website. Then click on the myADLS Dashboard section of the CPD Portal. From here you can create, amend or update your CPDPR ... or browse and book or shortlist ADLS activities (see below for an explanation of the shortlist function) and add non-ADLS activities ... or complete a post-activity reflection. Just follow those 3 easy steps. (For records prior to the CPD year ending 31 March 2020 please contact cpd@adls.org.nz)

You can record all of your CPD on our CPDPR. Any CPD provided by your own organisation, another provider or other source can be manually entered into your ADLS CPDPR. Note the difference with ADLS CPD activities is that they will be automatically logged on your CPDPR, so if you have booked and attended an ADLS course, it's even easier! There is a facility for you to convert this online CPDPR into a pdf to print for your records and/or to email on to anyone you chose, such as the Practice Manager. Remember that you must retain your CPDPR and verification records for a minimum of 3 years.

Only you can see your entire CPDPR. Your firm will be able to see the status of your CPD hours and also the activities you have shortlisted, booked and completed. They will not be able to access your learning needs, proposed actions or reflections. (ADLS also cannot see details of your CPDPR. )

CPD Pricing

Please note that when registering for an ADLS CPD livestream event that the link video and materials provided are for the sole use of that registrant.

Viewing by anyone other than those registered with ADLS to watch the link will be in breach of the copyright owned by ADLS and aspects of copyright works owned by the presenters. ADLS will not verify attendance or confirm CPD hours for those in breach of these copyright terms.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact our CPD team who are always happy to help, via email cpd@adls.org.nz or phone 09 303 5278.

All prices exclude GST.

CPD for Individuals

How to book a CPD event

For live events: Go to the 'CPD Calendar' tab under CPD on the ADLS website and select the CPD event you wish to attend. Once opened, click on the BOOK icon on the event's webpage. You will be asked to sign in if you haven't already. Enter your sign in email address and click next. Our system will then populate many of the fields on the registration page with the information held in relation to that email address. You will then need to supply any other outstanding information.

For CPD On Demand: Go to the 'CPD On Demand' tab under CPD on the ADLS website and select the CPD On Demand item you wish to participate in at some time within the 6 week period after purchase. Once opened, click on the PURCHASE icon on the event's webpage and follow the steps described above.

Anyone can book an ADLS CPD activity through our website. Organisations which require staff approval for CPD purchases must manage this process themselves. (The ADLS website must cater for all situations, for example, sole practitioners and firms without any such internal sign-off requirements.) If your organisation requires you to obtain approval before confirming a booking, you can use our online CPDPR to shortlist the activity.

Regrettably, our system requires you to generate a purchase order number ('your PO reference') when booking an event. If you do not need to enter one for your own firm or organisation's purposes, then we suggest that you simply make up a number or word to satisfy the automated system, in order to proceed.

You can choose to pay by credit card or charge the cost to your organisation. However, you should only select the latter option if you have authority to charge the expense to your firm.

How ADLS verifies attendance at it's CPD events

This depends, in part, on what type of event you attend. In most cases, we will send you an email acknowledging your attendance within 3 working days:

  • if you attend an ADLS live seminar, your name will be ticked off when you arrive. Within a day or two we will verify your attendance in our system.
  • If you view CPD On Demand, your CPD hours will automatically update to your CPDPR record upon submission of the Q&A.
  • If you attend a webinar, we will verify your attendance within two working days of the event.
  • If you viewed an ADLS On Demand item or live webinar as part of a group, we will send you an email acknowledging your attendance as soon as your CPD rep or Group Booking Co-ordinator has confirmed your attendance. If you do not receive an email from us, please ask your firm whether your CPD rep or Group Booking Co-ordinator has reconciled your attendance.

Once your attendance has been verified, the event will appear in the completed column of your CPDPR. Learning outcomes will also then automatically populate your reflections ready for you to amend them to check them and, if you wish to do so, to amend them so that they represent a true record.

CPD for Legal Executives

ADLS CPD and the ADLS CPDPR are available to legal executives, whether an ADLS member on non-member.

NZ Legal Executives who are employed by an ADLS member, can join as Contributing Members for a special rate of $50 plus GST, per year.

Click here for information on discounted membership rates and member benefits for legal executives.

Methods of CPD Delivery

Seminars (attended in person)

ADLS's seminars are run between 4pm and 6.15pm. Registrants will earn 2 CPD hours for their attendance. (There is a 15-minute break in the middle of each seminar.)

Seminars (attended via live stream)

Anyone can attend an ADLS seminar from anywhere, if they have a broadband internet connection. Interactive tools (similar to chat boxes) allow you to interact with us to ask questions of the presenters (which will be read out on your behalf). Technical support is available via in-session chat and phone.

Simply click on the link in the confirmation email to attend the seminar. We will broadcast music and an image 10 minutes before the seminar starts so that you can check that your connection and sound are working. This gives you time to contact us by telephone if there are any problems. For best results we suggest you use headphones.

It is important that your computer or device and internet connection are of sufficient specification to participate. Please check your set up with the applicable technical information which follows:

To participate via live stream there are two key requirements:

  • a modern device of sufficient specification (desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone) running an up-to-date version of your preferred browser
  • a broadband internet connection capable of 5Mbps download (fixed line broadband (ADSL/VDSL), fibre (Ultra Fast Broadband etc), or 3G/4G mobile broadband)

For assistance please email cpd@adls.org.nz or call 09 306 5747.

Webinars

Our webinars generally last one hour.

You can ask the presenter questions via a live chat session and these are answered during the webinar (usually in the last 10 minutes of the session which is expressly set aside for questions).

To access the webinar, simply click on the link in the confirmation email. We will broadcast music and an image 10-15 minutes before the webinar starts so that you can check that your internet connection and sound are working. This gives you time to contact us by telephone if there are any problems. For best results we suggest you use headphones.

Group bookings can be made for all our webinars.

CPD On Demand

All ADLS CPD On Demand items comply with the CPD Rules. Our On Demand questions are not tests - there is no pass or fail and we do not retain results or pass them on to anyone else.

We regularly update our CPD On Demand Listings and suggest you view this webpage for new recordings.

Cancellation Policies

Seminars, live stream seminars, webinars, conferences and forums

Registrations can be cancelled up to 5 working days before the date of the CPD activity, upon which a refund will be made less an administration fee. No refunds will be made after that time. However, you may nominate someone else to take your place.

Workshops

Due to the nature of our workshops, and in particular the need to complete pre-workshop preparations our usual cancellation policy will not apply. Registrations can be cancelled up to 15 working days before the date of the workshop upon which a refund will be made less an administration fee. No refunds will be made after that time. However, you may nominate someone else to take your place provided there is enough time for them to complete the required pre-work before the workshop.

For any cancellations or substitutions, please email cpd@adls.org.nz.
